Testimonials From Haumana

Nathan, Firefighter 1

  • I joined the HFD Explorers when I was in 9th grade. Here I learned valuable skills such as how to operate a fire hose, how to perform CPR, ropes and knots, and other job related skills. But the program did more than just teach me practical skills. It helped me develop important character traits such as teamwork, leadership, and responsibility. I was surrounded by like-minded peers who shared my passion for firefighting, and developed deep bonds with them as we worked together to achieve our goals.

Though my commitment, perseverance, and under the guidance of strong mentors, I am fulfilling my dream as a firefighter. I continue to give back to this program that has given me so much. I am grateful every day for the experiences that shaped the person I am today. I hope my journey motivates others to work hard and follow their dreams.

Les, Firefighter 3

  • My most valuable lessons from HFD Explorers was the significance of teamwork and camaraderie in the fire service. Whether we were tackling simulated rescue missions or conducting fire drills, collaboration was always at the forefront. I learned to trust my crew.  This spirit of unity and ʻohana continues to define my approach to firefighting today.

I am deeply grateful for the guidance and mentorship I received through the HFD Explorers program. It not only paved the way for my career as a firefighter but also shaped me into the person I am today – resilient, compassionate, and committed to making a difference in the lives of others. The values, work ethic, and leadership skills imparted to me by the program continue to serve as guiding principles in my journey as a firefighter, inspiring me to uphold the noblest traditions of the fire service and to always answer the call to serve with courage and integrity.

Lili, Firefighter 1

  • As the first female explorer to transition into a firefighter role, my journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. I am immensely grateful for the mentors, teachers, and friends who have supported and guided me every step of the way.

Navigating a traditionally male-dominated field presented its challenges, but with the unwavering support of my HFD Explorers ʻohana, I have turned my childhood dream into a reality. At just 13 years old, I set my sights on becoming a firefighter, and today, I am living that dream.

To all young women aspiring to join the firefighting profession, I say this: Believe in yourself, surround yourself with a supportive community like HFD Explorers, and work hard. With determination and perseverance, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.
