Mission and Vision
Our vision is to provide a safe, positive, and meaningful environment to facilitate real-world firefighting exploration while fostering a commitment to a life of service and professionalism. Our mission is to cultivate character, foster leadership skills, and inspire a commitment to service through firefighter training, educational initiatives, physical fitness programs, and community service engagement for Hawai‘i’s youth.
Brief History of the Program
Founded in 1981 to inspire and educate the next generation of firefighters, the HFD Explorers Program has grown into a cornerstone of community engagement and youth development. Established as a 501(c)(3) organization, the program has provided invaluable training and opportunities to Hawai‘i’s youth. The HFD Explorers program in partnership with the Honolulu Fire Department has opened its doors to future firefighters at station across ‘Oahu including Kalihi Kai, Makakilo, Nānākuli, East Kapolei, Waiau, and now at Waipahu Fire Station. In 2024, the program was awarded its first grant, marking a new chapter in our commitment to fostering the next generation of firefighting professionals.
Meet the Team
Po‘okela Hanson
Fire Captain and Executive Director
Captain Barney Po‘okela Hanson, a distinguished member of the Honolulu Fire Department, has led The HFD Explorers Program since 2016. He is dedicated his life’s work to youth development, community service, and aloha ‘āina efforts to restore Kaho‘olawe. He is also involved in efforts to restore Hawaiian names to fire stations across ‘Oahu. Captain Hanson's commitment to excellence has greatly contributed to the program's success, and the recognition of Honolulu as one of America's Best Employers by Forbes 2022.
